About Us

Gulfway Shopping Center is anchored by Sprouts Grocery, and includes long-term tenants like Jason’s Deli, Wells Fargo Bank, Bay Area Bicycles, and Panjo’s Pizza. The center occupies 14 acres of land at the corner of S. Padre Island Drive (SPID) and Airline Rd., one of the busiest corners in Corpus Christi, Texas. Daily traffic counts along SPID at our location are over 121,000, and on Airline over 80,000. Gulfway Shopping Center offers more than 166,000 square feet of retail and office space and an appealing tenant mix that includes both local and national businesses.

Our History

Peterson Development Company (PDC) was founded in 1950 by Ray E. Peterson. Ray started his business career with a grocery store downtown, then, in the 1950’s, he branched out into property management when he built Portairs Shopping Center, the first shopping center in Corpus Christi. Portairs was followed by Woodlawn and South Park Shopping Centers in the 1950’s. Gulfway Shopping Center followed in 1960. Subsequent generations of the family have sold Portairs, Woodlawn and South Park, and added Crossroads Shopping Village (across Airline from Gulfway) and Meadow Oaks Shopping Center at 2222 Airline, as well as other commercial and residential properties. The Peterson family is proud of the role Ray Peterson played in shaping the city, and it continues to develop properties that support a vibrant local business community.
